Red stuff in plumbing and faucets all of the sudden? What is all this?

October 30th, 2008 by Eric Foronjy

This is a FAQ called in from a friend who works for the city’s water department. They get the call monthly from some angry resident who is asking “What are you guys doing to my water?” After a few minutes on the phone the question is asked…”Do you have a water softener?” and the answer is always, “Yes.”

Unfortuneatly the distributor on standard softeners can break. when this occurs the resin beads in teh tank come through all the plumbing in the house. It could look like orange or red sand, it could just clog all airators and shower heads. Running the bathtup will easily show the beads.

It’s a big problem when this occurs, it takes lots of time and energy to remove these beads from the plumbing. It seems that when people buy in expensive softeners (sears, home depot) the damage they can cause is usually twice the cost of the softener.

Buying quality equipment will almost always avoids this problem.

Has this happened to anyone recently?
